LAHAINA
Hot cooking oil starts mall fire

Advertiser Staff

A fire Sunday at Ba-Le French Sandwich & Vietnamese Food in the Lahaina Cannery Mall food court caused an estimated $40,000 damage.

The fire started when a can of cooking oil was accidentally left on a hot stove, igniting flames that caused a grease fire in the exhaust duct system, according to Maui Fire Department officials.

The blaze was reported just after 10 p.m. by workers at the Compadres Bar and Grill in the mall.

Two engines and a fire truck responded to the alarm and had the flames extinguished within an hour, fire officials said.
