Preps: UCLA-, UConn-bound players No. 1 athletes

LOS ANGELES — Basketball players Kevin Love, who will attend UCLA, and Connecticut recruit Maya Moore were honored as national high school athletes of the year today.

They are the first basketball players to sweep the boys' and girls' awards since 2004, when future Orlando Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard and Tennessee's Candace Parker won.

Love received his circular silver award from New Jersey Nets star Vince Carter and last year's winner, Greg Oden, the No. 1 overall pick in the recent NBA draft by Portland.

"I know that last year Greg won and to follow in his footsteps in the next year is a tremendous honor," said Love, who closed his acceptance speech with "Go Bruins."

"You're kind of dumbfounded. You kind of have to pinch yourself and ask yourself if it's real and it is, and it feels great," he said.

Love averaged 33.6 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and three blocks last season, helping Lake Oswego, Ore., High to its third consecutive state title game appearance. He was a four-year varsity starter.

He also earned four other major national player of the year awards. His father, Stan, starred at Oregon and played in the NBA.

Love is nearing the end of his first week of summer classes at UCLA.

"I'm from Oregon, so I'm not used to the sunshine all the time, so that's not a big adjustment," he said. "College is going to be a lot of fun. Coach (Ben) Howland has done such a great job. I really wanted to come in and learn defense from him and learn his style of play. It fits me perfectly."

Love made sure to mention several of his future teammates by name.

"I know they've gone to two consecutive Final Fours and hopefully, we'll take it all the way this year," he said.

Moore led Collins Hill High in Suwanee, Ga., to an undefeated season and its third consecutive Georgia Class 5A state championship. The 6-foot senior helped the team compile a 125-3 record as a four-year varsity starter.

Moore averaged 25.5 points, 12.1 rebounds, four assists, 4.3 steals and 2.3 blocks last season. She collected her trophy from Los Angeles Sparks star Lisa Leslie and 2006 NBA rookie of the year Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets.

"Wow! I have such a rush right now just being in this room," said Moore, who had to borrow a red dress after her luggage was delayed en route to the ceremony. She hoped to have it returned in time to don a new outfit for the evening's ESPY Awards.

"I might have to keep getting used to the fact that my name is being listed among all these great athletes," she said. "Basketball has brought me so many possibilities."

Love beat out quarterback John Brantley of Ocala, Fla., soccer player Bryan Martinez of West Orange, N.J., pitcher-first baseman Rick Porcello, also of West Orange, and sprinter Bryshon Nellum of nearby Long Beach.

The other girls' nominees were volleyball outside hitter Alix Klineman of nearby Manhattan Beach, soccer forward Melissa Henderson of Richardson, Texas, softball pitcher Ashley Brignac of River Ridge, La., and discus thrower Emily Pendleton of Elmore, Ohio.

A national panel of sports media chose the winners based on individual statistics, impact on team success and accomplishments so far in their careers.

The awards are sponsored by Gatorade.
