Tennis: Second-seeded Spadea advances to quarters

Associated Press

NEWPORT, R.I. — Second-seeded Vince Spadea advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships by beating Paul Capdeville 6-3, 7-5 in the second round today.

The 32-year-old Spadea, a 2005 finalist on the Hall of Fame's grass courts, had his serve broken in the first game, but broke back in the fourth and took control of the set by breaking in the sixth.

"In grass court tennis, anytime you lose serve the first time it's not a good sign," he said. "But I'm ranked higher and have more experience."

Spadea, in his 15th season on tour and a top-100 player 11 of the past 13 years, also struggled with his serve in the second set, being broken in the fourth and 10th games. But he broke Capdeville in the third, fifth and 11th.

"I was able to dictate enough, especially on the big occasions," Spadea said.

In the final opening-round match, No. 4 seed Fabrice Santoro used chips, slices and a two-handed forehand to dominate Alexander Peya, 6-4, 6-1.

In other second-round play, Dick Norman ousted No. 8 seed Michael Berrer, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6); Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi outlasted Nathan Healey, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4; and Wesley Moodie beat Roko Karanusic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
