Tennis: Monfils upsets Davydenko at Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland — Gael Monfils upset top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 today in the first round of the Swiss Open.

Monfils and Davydenko were tied at 5-all in the third set Tuesday when rain forced the match to be suspended. The Frenchman then won both games today.

Also, Stefan Koubek of Austria beat second-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4, 6-3, and third-seeded Richard Gasquet of France defeated Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 6-3, 6-4.

Koubek took a 4-1 lead in the second set, and then saved four break points at 5-3 before winning on his first match point.

Igor Andreev of Russia beat Albert Montanes of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in another suspended match, winning the only game played today.
