Big Island police arrest 28 more for DUI

The Fourth of July week wasn't kind to some motorists on the Big Island. Police said yesterday that from July 3 to July 9, 28 motorists were arrested for drunk driving. Of those, 12 were involved in crashes and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 692 DUI arrests compared with 625 during the same period last year, an increase of 11 percent.

There have been 1,095 major accidents on the Big Island so far this year compared with 1,324 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.

So far this year, there have been 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 18 during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
