Watabu, 2 other Hawaii golfers advance at Publinx

Advertiser Staff

Casey Watabu survived a wild ride in stroke play to advance to the match play portion in defense of his U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Wheaton, Ill., today.

Watabu, who beat current PGA Tour pro Anthony Kim in last year's final, rebounded from a first-round 8-over 80 to shoot a 4-under 68 in the second round today, which stretched over two days because of thunderstorms.

Mark Harrell, of Hazelton, Ga., was the medalist in stroke play, finishing at 5-under-par 139.

Watabu finished stroke play at 4-over 148. The cut for match play was 7 over as Watabu moved up to a tie for 25th place.

The low 64 scores after two rounds of stroke play advanced to match play.

Watabu, from Kapa'a, Kaua'i, was one of three Hawai'i golfers to advance.

Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo, shot 5-over 77 today and finished at 5-over 149, tying for 33rd place.

Samuel Cyr of Makawao, Maui, shot 1-over 73 today and finished at 7-over 151, tying for 49th place.

Two other Hawai'i golfers, Max Bonk of Waimea, Hawai'i, and Layne Morita of Kapa'a did not advance.

Bonk had rounds of 81-74—155 to finish tied for 96th place. Morita had 84-91—175 for 152nd place.

Bonk finished his second round yesterday before play was suspended. Morita played his second round today.

In today's completion of his second round, Watabu chipped from 70 feet for birdie on the fifth hole, rolled in a 30-foot putt on No. 6 for an eagle and got up and down for another birdie on the par-5 seventh hole. The seventh hole was the same that Watabu had quintuple bogeyed for a 10 in the opening round.

"I'm just glad stroke play is over," Watabu said in a story on usapl.org. "I got to regroup and go out this morning. I just got my energy (back). I think I was running out of gas."

Watabu played just one hole before his round was suspended on Monday. He finished his first round yesterday at 8-over.

He began his second round on the back nine and recorded five birdies for a 5-under 31. But he gave strokes back with a double bogey on his 10th and a bogey on the 12th before thunderstorms suspended play again yesterday.
