Baseball: NL midseason awards
By Al Balderas
The Orange County Register
Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers
Key stats: .284 avg., 29 HR, 70 RBI
Comment: Without Fielder's 29 home runs and 70 RBIs, the Brewers would be nothing more than an average team in the mediocre NL Central. With Fielder, they're in first place and holding off the surging Chicago Cubs.
Cy Young Award
Jake Peavy, San Diego Padres
Key stats: 9-3 W-L, 2.19 ERA
Comment: Peavy leads the NL with 125 strikeouts, is second in ERA among starting pitchers and is one behind the leaders in victories. A strong second half could give him an impressive trifecta.
Rookie of the Year
Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies
Key stats: .286 avg., .358 OBP, 9 HR
Comment: Tulowitzki (Long Beach State) has committed just five errors at a tough position (shortstop). He also has nine home runs and 38 RBIs, which is a good reason the Rockies remain within striking distance of the top teams in the NL West.
Top Relief Man
Takashi Saito, Dodgers
Key stats: 23 of 25 save chances, 1.47 ERA
Comment: Opposing hitters thought they had Saito figured out after facing him last season, but he's the one who made the necessary adjustments to remain at the top of his game. Saito is putting up better numbers on par with than Eric Gagne's when he moved into the closer role after beginna starting role. career as a starter.
Comeback Player of the Year
Dmitri Young, Washington Nationals
Key stats: .339 avg., 8 HR, 43 RBIs
Comment: Young overcame an arrest, a divorce, diabetes and a 48-game season in 2006. He signed a minor-league contract at the beginning of spring, earned a spot on the 25-man roster and made the most of his opportunity by earning a trip to the All-Star Game and being one of the top hitters in the league.
Manager of the Year
Ned Yost, Milwaukee Brewers
Key stats: 49-39 W-L, 1st place in NL Central
Comment: The Brewers finished fourth in their division last season, 12 games under .500 and 8› games behind St. Louis. Yost spent the spring building confidence in his players, and it's paying off with the top spot in the NL Central and increased production from first baseman Fielder, shortstop J.J. Hardy, catcher Johnny Estrada and pitcher Ben Sheets.
