Honolulu church to celebrate 60th anniversary

Advertiser Staff

The First Assembly of God Honolulu, which started in 1947 with a handful of members in a school auditorium and has since grown into one of Oahu's largest Christian churches with five regions and thousands of members, is celebrating its 60th anniversary Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22.

"Our 60th Anniversary is not just a time to celebrate the past; rather, it is a time to be challenged for the future," said First Assembly of God Senior Pastor Klayton Ko, in a statement.

The three day festivity will start at 7 p.m. Friday, July 20 with a Celebration Service at the church's central location at Red Hill, atop an 11-acre property on the hills of Moanalua Valley. The Red Hill location is also home to the church's Christian Academy, which serves youth in grades kindergarten through high school, and the Aloha Fellowship Center.

Since the church was started by Pentecostal pastors Eldon and Juanita Vincent 60 years ago, it has spread to five locations on Oahu: Red Hill, Hawaii Kai, Kahalu'u, Wahiawa and Makakilo. Another church is in the planning stage.

Tickets are still available for the luau, which will be on the upper field of the Red Hill location, Saturday, July 21 at 4:00 pm. Call the church office at 836-2300 for more information.
