U.S. tops Slovenia at world volleyball

The U.S. Junior National volleyball team, captained by Honolulu's Kawika Shoji and Spencer McLachlin, turned back Slovenia, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 15-9, yesterday at the 2007 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship in Rabat, Morocco.
Team USA improved to 3-1 in Pool B, along with Brazil and Russia. However, Brazil and Russia remain ahead of the U.S. because of better point ratios, which serve as the tie-breaker. Brazil's point ratio (won/lost) is 1.206. Russia's ratio is 1.098 and the U.S. ratio is 1.024. The top two finishers in each pool will advance to the semifinals.
Shoji played all five games at libero yesterday while McLachlin played a reserve role at outside hitter and did not score.
William Price led Team USA with 19 points (15 kills, two blocks, two aces).
GOLF
GAMMIE HONORED
Former University of Hawai'i golfer Dale Gammie was honored by the National Golf Coaches Association as a member of the All-American Scholar Team.
Gammie, who completed her eligibility in May, was also Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year her final year.
The Pukalani, Maui native averaged 74.8 strokes per round and won UH's first individual title since 1986 at October's Heather Farr Memorial.
Gammie is a four-time All-WAC selection.
