Pan Am Games: Four athletes test positive for doping

Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Three Mexican athletes were suspended from the Pan American Games after testing positive for doping. A Brazilian volleyball player also faces a suspension for a positive test.

The three from Mexico weren't identified on Thursday, nor was the substance for which they tested positive during an "internal" check of the delegation before it embarked for Rio de Janeiro, said Felipe Munoz, president of the Mexican Olympic Committee.

"We will not enroll them," Munoz told The Associated Press.

Brazilian volleyball player Jacqueline Carvalho tested positive for the stimulant sibutramine, often used in weight-reduction medicine, and could be banned from the games, the Terra Web site reported.

The test was conducted on June 10 in Cologne, Germany, after the finals of the Italian league championship. Carvalho plays for Italy's Monte Schiavo Banca Marche Jesi.

"If there is official confirmation, the athlete will be replaced," Joao Olintho, the doctor of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, told Terra.
