ME defers on finding cause of arrested man's death

By Rod Ohira

The medical examiner's office has deferred finding cause of death, pending lab results, for a 56-year-old man who died Tuesday night at the Honolulu Police Department's main station cellblock.

The ME also is not naming the man until his identity is confirmed.

The man found unconscious in his cell at 10:15 p.m. was booked Tuesday as Charles Darell Carter, according to HPD records. Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records show Carter with 10 prior convictions.

Carter was charged with misdemeanor first-degree criminal tresspass and petty misdemeanor open lewdness.

Police say Carter died of an apparent medical condition and there's no suspicion of foul play.
