Kauai brushfire flareup brought under control

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i firefighters today reported a brushfire at Huleia National Wildlife Refuge under control at 2 p.m.

Firefighters responded at about noon when embers from the wildlife refuge fire flew across a dirt road and started a another fire in the nearby pasture, said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.

The burning tree line in the wildlife refuge and the leading edge of the fire in the pasture were knocked down by the fire department's helicopter.

Daubert said about two› acres of pasture and one acre of the wildlife refuge burned before the fires were declared under control.

Firefighters are still at the scene mopping up hot spots in the roots of the grass in the pasture, Daubert said.
