Cycling: Prosecutor clears Di Luca of doping offenses

Associated Press

ROME — Giro d'Italia winner Danilo Di Luca was cleared of doping offenses by a public prosecutor, his Liquigas team announced today.

Di Luca still faces a hearing before Italian Olympic Committee anti-doping prosecutor Ettori Torri on Saturday. He is being investigated for a possible connection to the "Oil For Drugs" case, a four-year-old doping scandal involving several athletes and doctors.

The public prosecutor's inquiry of Di Luca's connections to the case was thrown out by a judge in Pescara.

"I was always convinced I would be cleared, so I can't say I'm surprised," Di Luca said in a statement. "Now I'm waiting for another important step _ the meeting with (Torri). Sports justice counts just as much for me as ordinary law."
