Jang, Surtees qualify Jang, Surtees qualify

State high school champion Anna Jang shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Sectional Qualifying Tournament at the Waikoloa Beach & Golf Resorts' Kings' Course.

Jang, 15, will be a junior at Punahou School in the fall.

Tammy Surtees, 17, of Waikoloa, shot 78 to earn Hawai'i's second berth in the national tournament, which will be held at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., Aug. 6 to 12.

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono (79) will be the first alternate and Kahului's Kelcie Kawano (82) the second alternate.

WESTFIELD JUNIOR

Former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim shares fourth in the girls division, and Makawao's Robert Greenleaf is tied for 10th in the boys division after yesterday's first round of the 32nd Westfield Junior PGA Championship in Ohio.

Brook Beeler, of Butler, Ill., leads the girls after shooting an even-par 71 in her opening round. Kim is two shots back while Honolulu's Kristina Merkle opened with 77.

Chris DeForest, Cotekill, N.Y., tied the lowest opening-round score with a 6-under-par 65 and grabbed a three-stroke lead among the boys. Greenleaf shot 71, with 2006 Hawai'i state high school champion Chan Kim at 72 and Kailua's David Fink at 75.

TEXAS OPEN

Kalani High School senior Nicole Sakamoto shot a 3-over 75 yesterday to move into sixth place after the second round of the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout at San Antonio.

Sakamoto is at 11-over 155.

Mary Michael Maggio of Arkansas shot a 4-under 68 to take the lead at 144.

In the boys field, Waiakea junior Henry Park shot an 1-over 73 to tie for 12th at 147.

Robert Mayo of Texas shot a 4-under 68 for the second straight day at San Antonio Country Club to lead at 8-under 136.

FUTURES LEGEND

Punahou graduate Jonathan Khil shot an opening-round 7-over 78 to share 19th yesterday at the Future Legends in Wales, Wisc.

Brad Hopfinger and Troy Anderson each shot a 3-over 74 to lead the boys field.

In the girls division, Mid-Pacific junior Hayley Young shot a 9-over 81 to tie for seventh.

Ani Gulugian of California leads with 73.

WISE OPEN

AT THE RANDY WISE JUNIOR OPEN IN GRAND BLANC, MICH.,

Maryknoll junior Alexander Chu shot an opening-round 7-over 79 to tie for 52nd yesterday at the Randy Wise Junior Open in Grand Blanc, Mich.

Florida's Zeyu He shot a 5-under 67 to top the leaderboard.

In the girls division, Kamehameha graduate Alyssa Fukuoka shot a 10-over 82 to tie for 18th.

Shannon Warner of Michigan leads with 71.
