State flags will fly at half-staff for former first lady

Flags at all state and county buildings will be flown at half-staff on Sunday from sunup to sundown in honor of the late Lady Bird Johnson, a news release said. The former first lady will be interred on Sunday.

"Lady Bird Johnson's grace and spirit as first lady helped a mourning nation move forward during one of the most challenging periods in our country's history," Gov. Linda Lingle said in a news release.

"As we celebrate her life and the many contributions she made to our nation, I encourage Hawai'i residents to carry on Lady Bird Johnson's lifelong commitment to protecting the environment and preserving our Islands' natural resources."

Lingle's action is in conjunction with President George W. Bush's order to lower the U.S. flag on this day.
