While most fashion companies are switching their manufacturing from Europe and the U.S. to China and other Asian countries, Nicky Shoes has done the reverse.

The mom-and-pop company, owned by Thao and Kelly McGill, began by having its private-label shoes made in China, Vietnam and South Korea, then segued into manufacturing in Brazil. Now they have added a line that's made in family-owned factories in Tuscany, Italy. Thao McGill, also the designer for Nicky Shoes, met with the family to create a line that was just delivered to the stores in Pearlridge and Aloha Tower Marketplace last week.

The line at present comprises 15 styles, in three to five colors each. The fashion-forward shoes come in leopard print, metallics, red, white, navy, lime green and straw. They are priced at $60 to $68.

ROBERTA OAKS SHOW

Honolulu designer Roberta Oaks, who specializes in deconstructing and reconstructing vintage clothing, will hold a trunk show from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the hot new Kapahulu boutique Soleil.

There will be free giveaways and prizes, as well as cocktails and pupu.

CATZ LINE FOR BRIDES

Maui designer Tamara Catz, whose ever-so-chic boutique is in Pa'ia, has just introduced a wedding collection that includes gowns for the bride (14 styles) and dresses for the bridesmaid (10 styles). The line will be sold at the Pa'ia location beginning later this month.

The contemporary, feminine dresses are made of natural fibers such as silks and rayons. The simple silhouettes are embellished with beading and embroidery. A signature for the current Catz collection is shell accents, which are ideal for the Island bride.

While the quiet, unassuming Catz keeps a low profile on Maui, her clothes have caught the eye of fashion editors from Vogue, In-Style, Sports Illustrated and Lucky.

PUALANI 'SURFTIQUE'

Iwalani Isbell, the owner and designer of Pualani, a popular line of swim and beachwear, has just opened a flagship boutique, which she calls a "surftique," in the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel.

Now in its sixth year, the company was ready for a brick-and-mortar presence, Isbell said. "We wanted to promote the Pualani experience, where people receive individual attention for a perfect fit," she said. She has been offering personal service to friends and family in her showroom; the boutique will enable her to reach more customers.

The 400-square-foot space will offer swimwear in keiki, junior and missy sizes, as well as dresses, pants, athletic attire, hats, towels and beach bags.

A men's line of beachwear is in development.
