Honolulu to test new sirens today

Advertiser Staff

The city this morning will test newly installed siren warning systems at McKinley High School and Moanalua Valley between 8 and 10 a.m.

People in those areas can expect to hear several 20-second siren soundings during the testing period, said Peter Hirai, acting director of the city Department of Emergency Management.

The McKinley and Moa-nalua Valley sirens are the last in a series of equipment upgrades begun in 2004.

Money from state Civil Defense paid for the purchase and installation of the new sirens.

"We have now added eight additional solar-powered and battery-operated sirens to our inventory," Hirai said.

The new sirens have the advantage of being able to function during a power outage, he said.
