Sumo: Hakuho, Kotomitsuki tied for top at Nagoya

Associated Press

NAGOYA, Japan — Grand champion Hakuho coasted to a win over Aminishiki today to stay tied for the lead with Kotomitsuki at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament.

Mongolian Hakuho got a hold of Aminishiki's arm shortly after the faceoff and flung the komusubi off the raised ring to stay perfect at 7-0. Aminishiki fell to 3-4.

Hakuho is making his debut at sumo's highest rank and has looked strong over the first week of the tournament.

Sekiwake Kotomitsuki kept pace at 7-0, using his weight advantage to send Takamisakri out over the edge.

No. 4 maegashira Takamisakari dropped to 1-6.

In the day's final bout, grand champion Asashoryu of Mongolia overpowered Tokitenku to improve to 6-1 along with two others.

Asashoryu got a left-hand grip on Tokitenku's belt and forced out the komusubi, who dropped to 2-5.

Asashoryu is bidding for his 21st Emperor's Cup and his first since winning the title at the New Year tourney in January.

Ozeki Kaio kept pace and improved to 6-1 when No. 2 maegashira Dejima lost his footing at the faceoff and dropped 3-4.

Sixth-ranked maegashira Homasho stayed in the thick of things when he shoved out Kasugao to improve to 6-1. Kasugao, a 10th-ranked maegashira, dropped to 2-5.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai was handed his fourth loss of the tourney when Takekaze jumped to his side at the faceoff and swatted the ozeki down to the dirt surface.

No. 3 maegashira Takekaze picked up his first win of the 15-day tournament.

Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu bounced back from Friday's loss when he got a two-handed grip of Asasekiryu's belt and lifted the top maegashira out to pick up his fifth win against two losses.

Asasekiryu fell to 2-5.
