Kimberly Kim loses by one to 12-year-old Thompson

Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim led midway through the final round before falling by one stroke to Alexis Thompson today at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship in Westfield, Ohio.

Kim, a 15-year-old who now lives in Arizona, shot a 1-under 70 finish even at 284 for the tournament. Thompson, a 12-year old from Florida who became the youngest player to compete in the U.S. Women's Open two weeks ago, shot a 2-under 69 to finish at 1-under 283. Thompson became the youngest the champion in the tournament's 32-year history.

Both girls shared the lead after yesterday's third round.

"Alexis really earned a lot of respect from the girls out here," Kim said on the tournament Web site. "I feel really good about my game even though I was not able to win this week. I am looking forward to possibly competing next year on the Junior Ryder Cup team and representing the United States."

In the final round, Kim led by one stroke over Thompson through 14 holes. Thompson birdied the 15th while Kim settled for par to tie things up.

Kim then bogeyed the 16th and 17th while Thompson birdied the 16th and bogeyed the 17th.

Kim, the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion, parred the last hole while Thompson bogeyed. Thompson had five birdies today while Kim had three.

Moanalua junior Kristina Merkle shot an 1-over 72 to finish the tournament 16-over 300 and tied for 21st.

In the boys division, former Kaimuki golfer and state high school champion Chan Kim shot a 5-over 76 to finish the tournament tied for 24th at 8-over 292. Kim now resides in Arizona.

Chris DeForest took top honors by shooting a 3-over 74 to finish at 10-under 274, six strokes ahead of runner-up Mark Johnson.
