Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police are asking for the public's help in identifying the driver of a vehicle that struck a man early this morning in a Waikele crosswalk and then fled.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Lumiaina Street, just east of Lumiauau Street. Police said a 41-year-old 'Ewa Beach man had just parked his car on Lumiauau and was crossing Lumiaina when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle that was making a left turn from Lumiauau Street.

Police said the man was in a crosswalk when he was hit.

The man suffered head injuries and a dislocated knee and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

The vehicle that hit the man was described only as a light-colored sport utility vehicle. Police said they did not know if the vehicle was damaged as a result of the collision.

The driver may have been speeding, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police Traffic Division at 529-3499.
