Tennis: Ferrer sweeps to Swedish Open title

Associated Press

BASTAD, Sweden — David Ferrer of Spain beat countryman Nicolas Almagro 6-1, 6-2 today to win the Swedish Open for his fourth ATP title.

The second-seeded Ferrer broke Almagro in the opening game of the match and took a 5-1 lead after another break. In the second set, Ferrer twice broke the unseeded Almagro.

"I'm very happy for this win," said Ferrer, who lost only one set in his five matches at the clay-court tournament. "I played well all week. But I'm sorry for my friend Nicolas. Nicolas did not play so good. I was very focused."

Ferrer staved off four break points in the opening set, including three in the second game. Leading 4-1, Ferrer saved another break point with a brilliant drop shot.

Spaniards also won the last two finals _ Rafael Nadal in 2005 and Tommy Robredo last year.
