Japanese masters lecture at community college

Kapi'iolani Community College is hosting two unusual one-time-only classes with Japanese culinary masters this weekend.i From 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Tomizo Yamaguchi, owner of a more than 100-year-old sweet shop in Kyoto with branches in Osaka, Yokohama and Nagoya, and author of three books on Kyoto-style confectionary, will lecture about kyogashi, elegant, refined Japanese sweets developed in association with the Japanese tea ceremony. When you register, ask for "Urasenke Sweets."
i From 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Yoshikazu Tsuji, head of the Tsujitome Culinary School and owner of a Tokyo cha-kaiseki restaurant, will discuss the traditions of cha-kaiseki, a dining style originally based on vegetarian Buddhist cuisine but now expanded to focus on freshness, subtle flavoring and delicacy. When you register, ask for "Urasenke Kaiseke."
Both lecture-demonstrations will be delivered in Japanese with a professional translator on hand to give the English version. Cost is $20 for each demonstration and they take place in Ohia Auditorium at Kapi'olani Community College.
