The car overturned several times before stopping on its roof. Alcohol was not a factor, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Jermaine McKenzie, 18, was ticketed after telling troopers he fell asleep while driving a 2007 Dodge Charger on Interstate 75 near Naples, Fla., about 120 miles from Miami's campus.

Quarterback Robert Marve, 18, was in the back seat and suffered what the FHP termed as minor injuries. A university spokesman declined comment, saying the school was gathering information, but The Miami Herald reported Marve needed surgery on his left — non-throwing — hand, citing information from Robert Weiner, Marve's high school coach.

"They want to cleanse his hand and make sure it's not infected," Weiner told the newspaper.

Marve was in good condition today at Downtown Naples Hospital, spokeswoman Debbie Curry said. Messages left with Marve's family by The Associated Press were not immediately returned. A person answering the phone at McKenzie's home declined comment.

A third player, Colin McCarthy, 19, also was mildly shaken up, officials said.

McCarthy is a sophomore linebacker for the Hurricanes. McKenzie is a wide receiver; both he and Marve are incoming freshmen at Miami. McKenzie and McCarthy were both wearing seat belts, officials said.

Marve was one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the country last season, after leading Tampa Plant High to a state Class 4A championship. He set state records with 280 completions, 48 touchdowns and 4,380 passing yards as a senior, earning him Florida's "Mr. Football" award.
