NFL: Reports on all teams heading into camps

By Charean Williams
McClatchy Newspapers

Training camp gives teams their first real measurement. The Dolphins and Browns will be the first to open camp, with players scheduled to report next Sunday. Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram gives her opinion about where each team stands as training camp approaches:

1. Patriots

Last year: 12-4, lost to Indianapolis 38-34 in the AFC Championship Game

Training camp: July 27, Foxboro, Mass.

Key stat: The Patriots have had six consecutive winning seasons, the NFL's longest current streak of years with at least nine wins.

Biggest off-season news: The Patriots were the biggest movers and shakers during the off-season, adding LB Adalius Thomas, WR Wes Welker, WR Donte Stallworth and WR Kelley Washington, among others. But the biggest addition was WR Randy Moss, who has averaged 75 catches, 1,189 yards and 11 touchdowns per season in his nine NFL seasons.

2. Chargers

Last year: 14-2, lost to New England 24-21 in divisional round

Training camp: July 23, San Diego

Key stat: RB LaDainian Tomlinson broke the NFL record with 31 touchdowns, helping the Chargers lead the league in scoring with 492 points.

Biggest off-season news: The Chargers return 18 starters from the team with the best regular-season record in the league last season, but they have an all-new coaching staff. San Diego lost its coordinators — Cam Cameron (offense) to the Dolphins and Wade Phillips (defense) to the Cowboys — and then its head coach, Marty Schottenheimer. New coach Norv Turner has a 58-82-1 career record.

3. Colts

Last year: 12-4, Super Bowl champions

Training camp: July 29, Terre Haute, Ind.

Key stat: The Colts' passing offense has ranked no lower than sixth in the league since Peyton Manning arrived in 1998.

Biggest off-season news: After allowing a league-worst 173 rushing yards per game and 22.5 points per game in the regular season, the Colts allowed only 82.8 rushing yards and 16.3 points per game in the postseason. But they lost four key players in CB Jason David, S Mike Doss, CB Nick Harper and LB Cato June during the off-season.

4. Saints

Last year: 10-6, lost to Chicago 39-14 in the NFC Championship Game

Training camp: July 25, Jackson, Miss.

Key stat: QB Drew Brees, coming off major shoulder surgery, passed for a league-high 4,418 yards while leading the NFC with a 96.2 rating.

Biggest off-season news: The Saints' biggest need was at cornerback, where Fred Thomas tied for the NFL lead in touchdowns allowed last season, according to STATS, Inc. New Orleans signed Colts restricted free agent Jason David, who will start opposite Mike McKenzie. Thomas is expected to become the nickel corner.

5. Bears

Last year: 13-3, lost to Indianapolis 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI

Training camp: July 26, Bourbonnais, Ill.

Key stat: Devin Hester had six returns for touchdowns during the regular season, an NFL record, and he returned the opening kickoff in the Super Bowl for a touchdown.

Biggest off-season news: The Bears ranked fifth in total defense last season, but defensive coordinator Ron Rivera has departed, DT Tank Johnson has been cut and LB Lance Briggs is threatening to sit out the season in a contract dispute.

6. Eagles

Last year: 10-6, lost to New Orleans 27-24 in divisional round

Training camp: July 27, Bethlehem, Pa.

Key stat: QB Donovan McNabb needs 798 yards passing to overtake Randall Cunningham (22,877) for second in team history behind Ron Jaworski (26,963).

Biggest off-season news: McNabb tore a ligament (ACL) in his right knee in a Nov. 19 game against the Titans. Jeff Garcia replaced him and led the Eagles to a 6-2 record, including the playoffs. The Eagles let Garcia leave for the Bucs, but they drafted the University of Houston's Kevin Kolb in the second round, prompting McNabb to say he was "shocked" by the choice.

7. Ravens

Last year: 13-3, lost to Indianapolis 15-6 in divisional round

Training camp: July 29, Westminster, Md.

Key stat: New addition RB Willis McGahee averaged 5.5 yards per carry on runs to his left and 3.7 yards a carry elsewhere.

Biggest off-season news: The Ravens averaged 24.3 points per game, but 42 of their points — almost three a game — were scored by the defense. Baltimore traded for McGahee, who is the outside threat and all-purpose back that Jamal Lewis wasn't. McGahee, who missed his rookie season because of major knee surgery, has gained 3,365 rushing yards and scored 24 touchdowns in the past three seasons.

8. Bengals

Last year: 8-8, tied for second in AFC North

Training camp: July 26, Georgetown, Ky.

Key stat: QB Carson Palmer returned from major surgery on his left knee to throw for a franchise-record 4,035 yards.

Biggest off-season news: The Bengals had nine players arrested during the 2006 calendar year. LB Odell Thurman was suspended for the 2006 season, and WR Chris Henry will have to sit out the first eight games of the 2007 season. The Bengals are hoping that Tab Perry and/or Antonio Chatman can be the deep threat that Henry has become in his two seasons, averaging 15.3 yards per catch with six catches of 40 or more yards.

9. Broncos

Last year: 9-7, tied for second in AFC West

Training camp: July 28, Englewood, Colo.

Key stat: The Broncos have had four 1,000-yard rushers in the past four seasons: Clinton Portis (1,591) in 2003, Reuben Droughns (1,240) in 2004, Mike Anderson (1,014) in 2005 and Tatum Bell (1,025) in 2006. None of the four is on the roster.

Biggest off-season news: The Broncos have attended funerals for two teammates this off-season. Cornerback Darrent Williams was shot to death in a drive-by shooting on New Year's, and, less than two months later, running back Damien Nash collapsed and died after a charity basketball game. The Broncos will play this season in memory of their teammates.

10. Seahawks

Last year: 9-7, lost to Chicago 27-24 in divisional round

Training camp: July 26, Kirkland, Wash.

Key stat: Left tackle Walter Jones, a perennial Pro Bowler, allowed 10.5 sacks last season. He had allowed only 11 sacks over the three previous seasons combined.

Biggest off-season news: The Seahawks traded WR Darrell Jackson, who was upset about his contract, to San Francisco during the off-season. Jackson had three 1,000-yard seasons in seven years with the Seahawks, and he scored 10 touchdowns last season while gaining 956 yards in 13 games. Former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch will move to flanker, where he is expected to become QB Matt Hasselbeck's top target.

11. Cowboys

Last year: 9-7, lost to Seattle 21-20 in wild-card round

Training camp: July 24, San Antonio

Key stat: The Cowboys scored 425 points last season, which was their highest total since 1995. They scored at least 35 points in four games.

Biggest off-season news: Bill Parcells retired after four seasons in Dallas. He never won a playoff game but left the organization in better shape than he found it. Wade Phillips, who was 48-42 in three seasons with Buffalo, two with Denver and season-ending interim stints with New Orleans and Atlanta, was hired because of his success with the 3-4 defense.

12. Jaguars

Last year: 8-8, tied for second in AFC South

Training camp: July 27, Jacksonville

Key stat: Fred Taylor (1,146) and Maurice Jones-Drew (941) just missed becoming only the fourth pair of backs from the same team to rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

Biggest off-season news: Jack Del Rio, who enters his fifth season without a playoff victory, pushed for the Jags to draft QB Brady Quinn. But James Harris, the vice president of player personnel, selected free safety Reggie Nelson instead. Thus, Del Rio has had to try to patch up his relationship with starting QB Byron Leftwich, who is in the final year of his contract and expected to leave Jacksonville after this season.

13. Jets

Last year: 10-6, lost to New England 37-16 in wild-card round

Training camp: July 27, Hempstead, N.Y.

Key stat: QB Chad Pennington has a career completion percentage of 65.1, which ranks second in NFL history to Kurt Warner (65.6).

Biggest off-season news: The Jets used a running back-by-committee last season after Curtis Martin's knee injury forced his retirement. But they traded for Thomas Jones during the off-season. Jones had more than 1,200 yards rushing in each of the past two seasons with the Bears.

14. Steelers

Last year: 8-8, tied for second in AFC North

Training camp: July 23, Latrobe, Pa.

Key stat: The Steelers are 12-1 when Willie Parker rushes for at least 100 yards.

Biggest off-season news: Bill Cowher quit, and the Steelers lost top assistants Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm to the Cardinals. They hired Mike Tomlin, 35, as their 16th head coach. Tomlin, the first black head coach in the franchise's 74-year history, promises to stick to the basics in Pittsburgh — a strong running back and a tough defense.

15. Panthers

Last year: 8-8, second in NFC South

Training camp: July 27, Spartanburg, S.C.

Key stat: The Panthers averaged 16.9 points per game last season, sixth worst in the NFL.

Biggest off-season news: Carolina parted ways with offensive coordinator Dan Henning after the Panthers were outscored 110-55 in the fourth quarter last season. Jeff Davidson takes over; he spent the past two seasons as the Browns offensive line coach after grooming for a coordinator job under Charlie Weis in New England.

16. 49ers

Last year: 7-9, third in NFC West

Training camp: July 28, Santa Clara, Calif.

Key stat: The 49ers improved by 79.6 yards per game over 2005, averaging 316.4 yards per game in 2006.

Biggest off-season news: The 49ers fired defensive coordinator Billy Davis, replacing him with Chargers linebackers coach Greg Manusky. They also spent $40 million to sign four new defensive starters, including CB Nate Clements, and used six of nine draft picks on defensive players, including top pick LB Patrick Willis.

17. Chiefs

Last year: 9-7, lost to Indianapolis 23-8 in wild-card round

Training camp: July 26, River Falls, Wis.

Key stat: RB Larry Johnson's 416 carries broke the NFL record.

Biggest off-season news: The Chiefs finally traded QB Trent Green to the Dolphins, leaving Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard to compete for the starting job. Croyle, a third-round pick last year, will be given every chance to win the job. He was 3-for-7 for 23 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in two games last season.

18. Falcons

Last year: 7-9, third in NFC South

Training camp: July 25, Flowery Branch, Ga.

Key stat: The past two seasons combined the Falcons are 5-13 after October.

Biggest off-season news: The Falcons traded backup QB Matt Schaub to Houston, leaving them to hope Michael Vick finally develops into the franchise quarterback they drafted. Entering his seventh season, Vick still faces questions about his ability as a passer. There also are concerns about him off the field. Federal authorities investigating dogfighting twice have raided property owned by Vick.

19. Cardinals

Last year: 5-11, fourth in NFC West

Training camp: July 27, Flagstaff, Ariz.

Key stat: Edgerrin James bec ame the first Cardinal to rush for 1,000 yards since Adrian Murrell in 1998. But James' 1,159 yards were his fewest in four seasons.

Biggest off-season news: Ken Whisenhunt is the Cardinals' eighth head coach since they moved to Arizona in 1988. He replaces Dennis Green, who was 16-32 in three seasons with the Cardinals. Whisenhunt will call his own plays but will rely on help from offensive line coach Russ Grimm and coordinator Todd Haley.

20. Rams

Last year: 8-8, second in NFC West

Training camp: July 26, St. Louis

Key stat: Steven Jackson's 2,334 yards from scrimmage last season is the fifth-best total in NFL history.

Biggest off-season news: The Rams ranked 31st against the run last season. They did little to address their defense in free agency, but used the 13th overall pick to select Nebraska DT Adam Carriker. Carriker will start next to La'Roi Glover, with Leonard Little and James Hall at the ends.

21. Lions

Last year: 3-13, fourth in NFC North

Training camp: July 25, Allen Park, Mich.

Key stat: Since Matt Millen became the team's general manager in 2001, the Lions are 6-42 on the road.

Biggest off-season news: For the fourth time in five years, the Lions used a top-10 pick on a receiver. Charles Rogers, the second overall pick in 2003, is out of football, and Mike Williams, the No. 10 choice in 2005, was traded this off-season. But Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick this year, and Roy Williams, the seventh overall choice in 2004, give the Lions a pair of franchise receivers to go with Mike Furrey, a converted safety who made 98 receptions last season.

22. Packers

Last year: 8-8, second in NFC South

Training camp: July 27, De Pere, Wis.

Key stat: The Packers ranked 31st in red-zone touchdown percentage at 32.7.

Biggest off-season news: QB Brett Favre, who turns 38 this season, is back. But Green Bay didn't get him any help. He had hoped for a trade for WR Randy Moss, but Moss instead went to the Patriots. That has left Favre with Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Carlyle Holiday and third-round pick James Jones as his top targets.

23. Titans

Last year: 8-8, tied for second in AFC South

Training camp: July 27, Nashville

Key stat: QB Vince Young won eight games last season, the fifth-most in NFL history for a rookie.

Biggest off-season news: RB Travis Henry has departed, as have WRs Bobby Wade and Drew Bennett. Henry was the team's leading rusher with 1,211 yards. Bennett (46-737-3) and Wade (33-461-2) were the team's top receivers. CB Pacman Jones has been suspended for the season. Tennessee refused to get in any bidding wars for any big-name free agents and is relying on young players, less expensive free agents and draft picks to fill holes.

24. Redskins

Last year: 5-11, fourth in NFC East

Training camp: July 27, Ashburn, Va.

Key stat: The Redskins allowed an NFL-worst 66 plays of 20 or more yards, with 16 of those going for touchdowns.

Biggest off-season news: The Redskins, who ranked 31st in total defense last season, gave ex-Bills LB London Fletcher-Baker a $10 million signing bonus. Fletcher-Baker, 32, started for defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Buffalo and will replace Lemar Marshall at MLB.

25. Giants

Last year: 8-8, third in NFC East

Training camp: July 27, Albany, N.Y.

Key stat: Eli Manning is 20-21 as the Giants' starting quarterback.

Biggest off-season news: Tiki Barber, who had 2,127 yards from scrimmage last season, retired. The Giants have handed the job to his backup, Brandon Jacobs, but they also pulled off a trade for Reuben Droughns. Jacobs and Droughns, who played for the Browns, gained a combined 1,181 rushing yards last season.

26. Buccaneers

Last year: 4-12, fourth in NFC South

Training camp: July 26, Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Key stat: The Bucs have returned 1,825 kickoffs in franchise history, but none have gone for a touchdown.

Biggest off-season news: The Bucs, who already had re-signed QB Chris Simms, signed free agent Jeff Garcia and traded for Jake Plummer. Plummer says he's retired, though the Bucs still have hopes of talking him into a comeback. Garcia, who was 6-2 as a starter with the Eagles last season, including the playoffs, heads into training camp as the starting quarterback.

27. Dolphins

Last year: 6-10, fourth in AFC East

Training camp: July 22, Davie, Fla.

Key stat: DE Jason Taylor, whose 13.5 sacks helped win him Defensive Player of the Year honors last year, has 89.5 sacks since 2000, the most in the NFL during that span.

Biggest off-season news: The Dolphins, who replaced head coach Nick Saban with Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, passed on drafting QB Brady Quinn. Instead, Miami traded for QB Trent Green, 37. Green takes over for Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington, both of whom struggled last season, with Cleo Lemon and second-round pick John Beck as the backups.

28. Bills

Last year: 7-9, third in AFC East

Training camp: July 26, Pittsford, N.Y.

Key stat: The Bills averaged 300 yards a game in their final seven games, a 59-yard improvement over the first nine games.

Biggest off-season news: The Bills traded RB Willis McGahee and LB Takeo Spikes. CB Nate Clements and LB London Fletcher-Baker left in free agency. The Bills drafted RB Marshawn Lynch to replace McGahee and then LB Paul Posluszny to take over for Fletcher-Baker in the middle.

29. Texans

Last year: 6-10, fourth in AFC South

Training camp: July 26, Houston

Key stat: The Texans have allowed 272 sacks since 2002, the most in the league during that span.

Biggest off-season news: The Texans, who passed on QBs Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler in the 2006 draft because they had David Carr, finally gave up on Carr. Houston traded with the Falcons to get Matt Schaub and then gave him a six-year, $48 million deal, though he has only six interceptions, six touchdowns and an 0-2 record in his career.

30. Vikings

Last year: 6-10, third in NFC North

Training camp: July 25, Mankato, Minn.

Key stat: The Vikings' 282 points last season was the franchise's lowest total since they scored 277 in 1993.

Biggest off-season news: The Vikings ignored their need for a quarterback — unknown Tarvaris Jackson is their starter — and drafted RB Adrian Peterson with the seventh overall pick. Peterson rushed for the third-most yards (4,045) on the second-most attempts (747) and scored the fourth-most rushing touchdowns (41) in Oklahoma Sooners history.

31. Raiders

Last year: 2-14, fourth in AFC West

Training camp: July 26, Napa Valley, Calif.

Key stat: The Raiders scored only 12 touchdowns from scrimmage last season, the fewest in NFL history during a 16-game season.

Biggest off-season news: The Raiders hired 31-year-old Lane Kiffin as their head coach. They parted ways with Aaron Brooks, traded for QB Josh McCown and drafted QB JaMarcus Russell, and they traded WR Randy Moss. Oakland has nowhere to go but up, having failed to win a division game since 2004.

32. Browns

Last year: 4-12, fourth in AFC North

Training camp: July 22, Berea, Ohio

Key stat: The Browns allowed 54 sacks last season, third-worst in the NFL.

Biggest off-season news: The Browns have had 12 starting quarterbacks since they returned to the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1999. Charlie Frye is expected to retain the starting position this season, but the Browns traded with the Cowboys on draft day to get Brady Quinn. Quinn, who threw 69 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his last two seasons at Notre Dame, is the future.
