Kauai man drowned after saving friend

A 19-year-old Kaua'i man drowned yesterday at Larsen's Beach in Moloa'a after helping save a friend.

John Moises of Kapa'a was pronounced dead at the scene, said Kaua'i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert.

Daubert said Moises and two men, both 18, were diving at Larsen's Beach at about 5:40 p.m. when they drifted outside the reef and were caught in the current.

One of the young men managed to make it to nearby rocks and hung on, while Moises helped the other climb onto the rocks.

The two men attempted to help Moises onto the rocks but he was swept out to sea by a large wave after getting his leg caught between large underwater rocks.

Firefighters found Moises unconscious with major injuries 40 yards offshore, said Daubert.

The two survivors suffered minor injuries, said Daubert.
