Maui's Nguyen to fight in televised bout

The Maui News Staff

Baldwin High School graduate Dat Nguyen will make his national-television debut as a professional boxer on Wednesday when he faces Castulo Gonzalez in a featherweight bout that will be carried by ESPN2.

Nguyen, undefeated in 10 fights with six knockouts, will face Gonzalez (9-2, 3 KOs) on the undercard of a bout between Mike Oliver and former WBO bantamweight champion Cruz Carbajal at The Castle at Park Plaza in Boston. The "Wednesday Night Fights'' matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. HST.

"For me, to start boxing, you always dream about fighting on TV,'' Nguyen, a 2001 Baldwin graduate, said to The Maui News.

Nguyen fights out of Vero Beach, Fla., and trains under Buddy McGirt.

"There's nothing else to prepare for now,'' Nguyen said. "I just have to stay relaxed – try to stay relaxed and not think about the fight too much.''

Nguyen stopped Yamin Mohammed in the sixth round in his last fight, June 18 in Uncasville, Conn.

Gonzalez won his last fight by unanimous decision against Barbaro Zepeda in February at Uncasville. Nguyen also fought on that card, beating Vineash Rungea by unanimous decision.

"Neither of these young men take a step back in the ring, and that will make this an unbelievably exciting fight,'' said Rich Cappiello, Nguyen's promoter.
