Sambueno named to junior national bowling team

Toby Sambueno, an 'Aiea High School graduate, was named to the United States junior national bowling team.

Sambueno finished eighth at the U.S. Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. At the week-long event, Sambueno led after the qualifying round, which had 1,080 bowlers, and the semifinals. He finished with a 6,139 total for 30 games.

Adam Martinez of Texas took top honors with a 6,189 total.

The top five finishers were named to the junior national team, along with three additional bowlers chosen by the junior national team committee.

Jarrett Mizo, a Roosevelt graduate, was 27th with a 5,911 total.

Other bowlers from Hawai'i who competed in the 18-game qualifying round were: Darin Villegas (165th, 189.22 average), Jaron Goto (226th, 186.83), Vaseem Anwar (241st, 186.17), Darren Hidani (268th, 185.28), Eric Tsukamoto (270th, 185.17), Kyle Nagamine (291st, 184.28), Dustin Hara (343rd, 182), Joshua Tajiri (399th, 180.50), Peter Mochizuki (538th, 176.11), Kellen Inafuku (586th, 174.28), Zachary Lee (613th, 173.39), Micah Kamiyama (835th, 164.72), Wyatt Hayashida (881st, 162.94), Andre Lara III (923rd, 161.06), Daniel Toyooka-Lim (160.83, 925) and Jordan Ono (1,041st, 150.94).

Girls from Hawai'i who bowled in the qualifying round were: Shaina Carnate (93rd, 180), Jordeen Koizumi (129th, 176.72), Seiko Santos (178th, 173.44), Jodi-Ann Gum (185th, 172.78), Suzana Signaigo (226th, 169.50), Tara Nishida (233rd, 168.72) and Renee Jong (345th, 161.83).
