Cycling: Italy's Mazzoleni retires

Associated Press

ROME — Eddy Mazzoleni, the third-place finisher at the Giro d'Italia, retired today, three days after denying involvement in the "Oil for Drugs" case.

Mazzoleni was questioned by CONI prosecutors on Friday.

The 34-year-old Mazzoleni is one of several Italian athletes reportedly linked to Italian doctor Carlo Santuccione, who allegedly provided doping products.

Mazzoleni, provisionally suspended by his Astana team last month, faced a possible ban of up to two years.

"Eddy Mazzoleni took this decision alone, without any pressure," Astana said in a statement.
