Transpac: Disney's Pyewacket off to a good start

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Pyewacket took the early lead among the Division 1 boats that started yesterday in the 44th biennial Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawai'i.

In an 8 a.m. report today, Pyewacket was headed generally southwest, making 13 knots, followed by Doug Baker's Magnitude 80 and Mike Campbell and Dale Williams' Peligroso and Bob Lane's Medicine Man, which tried the north for awhile before dipping back down on a parallel course.

The last of 74 boats in the biennial Transpacific Yacht Race left Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, Calif., yesterday without one of the race's biggest names.

Roy Disney, who has sailed in 15 Transpacs from California to Hawai'i, decided to send off Pyewacket without him.

"I just decided to let the younger guys do it," Disney, 77, said in a story at the race's Web site.

Pyewacket is being co-skippered by Disney's son Roy Pat Disney and boat manager Gregg Hedrick. Also on board is New Zealand America's Cup skipper Dean Barker.

The elder Disney will fly to Hawai'i tomorrow to await the arrival of the boats, which will finish off Diamond Head.

Twenty-three boats — the larger and faster of the entries — left yesterday in balmy southeast zephyrs of 3 to 4 knots off Point Fermin.
