  • Current issues and concerns facing not-for-profit organizations and charitable foundations will be the focus of a free, public discussion by Mary Bitterman, former head of Hawai'i Public Television. The discussion, "GOVERNANCE OF THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR: Not-for-Profit Organizations and Charitable Foundations," is sponsored by the Shidler College of Business and the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai'i. It is scheduled 6-7:45 p.m. tomorrow in the law school's Classroom 1 on the Manoa campus. Bitterman is president of The Bernard Osher Foundation, a private San Francisco-based foundation that supports higher education and the arts. She is also a Bank of Hawaii director and board chair of Public Broadcasting Services. Reservations: 956-6902.

  • Brian Chee, founder of the Advanced Network Computer Laboratory, will talk about this independent testing lab for emerging technology, now part of the University of Hawai'i School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology, July 25. In the speech to the Hawai'i TeleCommunications Association, he will also explore the subject of balancing the theory of computer science with the real world practice of emerging technology. The meeting is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. (registration) to 1 p.m. at the Hale Koa hotel, Waikiki Showroom. Fee; nonmembers welcome; first four college students registering admitted free.
