Yes, there's an economic reason to recycle your soda cans here in Hawai'i — to get your 5 cents back. But did you know that recycling just one aluminum can saves as much energy as it takes to run the TV for three hours? Think of it — less than a six-pack of recycled cans for the entire "Sopranos" season. Tossing it in the trash? Fuhggedaboudit.

UPPING YOUR INTAKE

ANY WAY'S OK TO FULFILL FIVE A DAY

Which is best: fresh, frozen or canned? All can be good for you. Fresh fruits and vegetables lose nutrients as they age, so pick fresh, local fruits and vegetables to get the most benefits. Frozen are flash-frozen at the peak of their ripeness and are high in nutrients; choose unsweetened without sauces. More caution should be taken when choosing canned — they have similar amounts of vitamins and minerals but may contain added sugar and salt. Choose low-sodium varieties or fruit packed in water or its own juice. Dried fruits are great, too: portable and a longer shelf life, but higher in calories. Info: www.healthyhawaii.com.
