WAIMEA
Hikes offered on stream trail

Advertiser Staff

The Kamananui Stream Trail at Waimea Valley Audubon Center recently reopened to the public, and hikes are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 25.

The trail was overgrown with hau, and the Hawai'i Trail and Mountain Club cleared the area considered the most challenging hike at Waimea.

Hikers can explore Kamananui Stream above Waimea Falls, see native o'opu, rare aquatic moth pupae and soaring white-tailed tropical birds.

There are numerous stream crossings and steep ascents on the six-mile hike.

Reservations required. Cost $3, cash only. Call 638-9199.
