A's Komine, Suzuki first Hawaii-born battery in majors

Advertiser Staff

When right-handed reliever Shane Komine took the mound for the Oakland Athletics against the Texas Rangers tonight in the eighth to pitch to catcher Kurt Suzuki, the A's formed the first Hawai'i-born battery in major league history at Oakland, Calif.

The A's lost their ninth in a row, 11-4.

Komine pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, no runs, with no walks and no strikeouts. Suzuki went 0 for 2 including a walk, strikeout and a sacrifice fly.

Komine, a Kalani High alum from Honolulu, and Suzuki, a Baldwin High graduate from Wailuku, Maui, were called up to majors from Triple-A earlier this season.

Suzuki became the starting catcher on Monday when the A's traded Jason Kendall to the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Komine made his second relief appearance of the season.
