Cosme loses strength, now a tropical storm

Advertiser Staff

Hurricane Cosme dropped to tropical storm strength overnight, but continued on track toward the southern Big Island.

The National Weather Service was predicting this morning that the center of the tropical storm could pass near South Point on Friday night or Saturday morning.

While the storm is expected to continue losing strength as it moves across cooler waters east of Hawai'i, current estimates keep it as a weak tropical storm through its contact with the Big Island. They estimate winds at near 40 mph through Saturday.

"The official track forecast brings Cosme near or over the Hawaiian Islands in four to five days," the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
