Upper Kula residents may notice a chlorine smell in their tap water later this week as they begin receiving water from treatment facilities in Hali'imaile and Makawao.

The Department of Water Supply said reservoirs that normally serve the region are at low levels due to drought. The 30 million-gallon Waikamoi Reservoir is empty, and the 100 million-gallon Kahakapao Reservoir is at 13 percent capacity, officials said.

As a result, production at the Olinda Water Treatment Facility will be cut starting tomorrow. Unlike the Hali'imaile and Makawao plants, Olinda uses chloramines for disinfection, which does not have a chlorine smell.
