Pedestrian safety campaign starts today

Advertiser Staff

The state Transportation Department will begin airing pedestrian safety TV and radio spots today to raise awareness of driving safely around school zones.

Public schools will resume classes July 30 and the "Safe Routes to School" spots will run through Aug. 5.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded that a recently amended crosswalk law will result in heftier fines and the possible loss of driver's licenses for repeat offenders.

Motorists who fail to stop for a pedestrian already in a crosswalk can be fined $150 for a first offense and $300 plus three months license revocation for a second offense within a year, and $1,500 and six months license revocation for a third violation within two years.

State crews are moving intersection stop lines further back from certain crosswalks, and replacing faded crosswalks on Farrington Highway along the Wai'anae Coast. In Waipahu, the state will install 68 new pedestrian countdown timers next month along Farrington Highway.
