H-1 lanes reopened after crash injures 2 women, child

Advertiser Staff

All lanes of the H-1 Freeway have reopened after a multiple-vehicle accident early this morning sent two women and a child to The Queen's Medical Center.

Westbound lanes were reopened as of 6:56 a.m. and the eastbound zipper lane was reopened at 6:15 a.m.

A section of the freeway near the Pearl City-Waimalu off-ramp was shut down just after 1 a.m. following a crash that injured two women and a child.

Police said one vehicle spun out and the other hit it, forcing the ejection of one of the women, 22, reported to be in critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy were also taken to Queen's in serious and stable condition, respectively, Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.

A semi truck is also believed to have been in the accident.

The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed to allow police vehicular homicide investigators to examine the crash site.

Although the incident happened in the westbound lanes, it caused a major delay in morning rush-hour traffic as many town-bound motorists slowed to look at what was happening on the other side of the freeway.

The "gapers' block" added approximately 10 to 20 minutes to the morning commute between 6:30 to 7 a.m.
