Honolulu council expense-account spending detailed

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu City Council members have spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on meals, snacks and other discretionary items over the past year, public records show.

Each of the council's nine members receives $12,000 a year to pay for office supplies, travel, gifts and other expenses connected to their city work. An accounting of the spending was recently filed.

The money paid for everything from new leather office furniture to renewal of a passport, records show.

Some members spent nearly all their allotments, while others spent much less.

Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi spent the most: $11,942. Councilman Gary Okino spent the least: $1,302.
