Eastbound zipper lane reopened near Waimalu

Advertiser Staff

The eastbound zipper lane was reopened at 6:15 this morning.

The zipper lane, along with all westbound lanes on the H-1, had been shut down near the Waimalu exit following a critical accident around 1 a.m. that sent two women and a toddler to The Queen's Medical Center. Traffic investigators were at the scene until about 5:45 a.m.

Police said one vehicle spun out and the other hit it, forcing the ejection of a 21-year-old woman who remains in critical condition. The 19-year-old woman was listed in serious condition and the 3-year-old boy was stable.

A semi truck is also believed to have been in the accident.

Eastbound traffic into town is thick up to the accident site, but once past the Waimalu exit, traffic is considerably lighter.

No other stalls or accidents have been reported on any of the major roadways into town.
