Blood donations an ongoing need

By Diane S.W. Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

Blood is needed every day in Hawai'i, so it's important that people donate to keep the supply going, said Stephanie Rosso, director of communications for the Blood Bank of Hawai'i.

"I think every day hundreds of patients count on volunteer donors for their survival — it's a great way to make a big difference in people's lives in a small amount of time," Rosso said.

Rosso said new volunteers are especially needed during the summer, when many regular donors go on vacation or take part in recreational activities.

To donate, you must be in good health, at least 18 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and provide a valid photo identification. Rosso said it takes an hour to do the paperwork, get vital signs checked and conduct a medical history interview.

"But blood collection takes five to eight minutes," Rosso said. "And in that hour, you can help save three lives."

For more information, call the Blood Bank of Hawai'i at 845-9966 or visit www.bbh.org. Appointments for donation are encouraged, but walk-ins are also accepted.
