Four golfers from Hawaii honored

Four women golfers from Hawai'i were named to the Division I National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.

Gonzaga's Sarah Sheffield (Kea'au '04) is majoring in English, Portland State's Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05) is majoring in Economics, and Santa Clara's Jamie Nonaka (Punahou '06) and Stanford's Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) are undecided.

Morinaga also was named to the Big Sky Conference Spring All-Academic Team.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

  • Stanford's Hongzhe Sun ('Iolani '03), who recently completed his eligibility, won the 100 backstroke (56.16 seconds) at the Janet Evans Invitational Sunday.

  • Florida State freshman diver Aleia Monden (St. Andrew's '06 of Mililani) was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the National Honor Society for college freshmen, in March.

    Students who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 GPA at the end of any full-time curricular period during their freshman year are eligible for membership.

    SOFTBALL

  • Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05), who received a release from Tennessee, was named to the Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) freshman second baseman Kelly Nishitomi (Castle '06 of Kane'ohe) was named a Northwest Conference Scholar-Athlete after earning a 3.539 GPA as an undecided major.

    TENNIS

  • UC Irvine junior Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04) was selected to the Big West Conference Spring All-Academic Team. She is a sociology major.

    LACROSSE

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) freshman Alana Kansaku-Sarmiento (Hilo) was named a Northwest Conference Scholar-Athlete after earning a 3.566 GPA as an undecided major.

    COMMITMENTS

  • Two volleyball players from Hawai'i have signed with NAIA school Menlo (Atherton, Calif.), according to a release. Shaleia Auld, an outside hitter from Mililani, and Pomai Ibarra, a defensive specialist from Kamehameha-Maui, will join the Oaks in the fall.

  • Amber Kamaka, a 2007 Kapolei High graduate, has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Midland College of Texas. Kamaka was an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West second-team selection this year.
