Kaneko tied for second at Betsy Rawls tourney

Sacred Hearts senior Ayaka Kaneko shot a 1-under-par 70 yesterday and is tied for second, one stroke behind Diane Kwon of Fremont, Calif. after the first round of the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa.

Kaneko is tied with Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla.

The tournament, a 54-hole event, is conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. The 78-player field features players from 21 states, Canada and Peru.

In other AJGA tournaments yesterday:

  • Pono Calip of Pahoa is tied for second after a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Hamni Bank Junior Open at Santa Clarita, Calif. Jordan Lee of Tarzana, Calif. leads after a 66. Henry Park of Waikoloa is tied for 70th after an 84.

  • Kamuela's Max Bonk shot a 2-over 72 and is tied for ninth after the first round of the Golf World West Coast Championship at Pleasanton, Calif. Eric Mina of Fremont, Calif. leads after a 66. Ethan Wang shot a 77 and is tied for 36th.

    CALLAWAY JUNIOR

    Honolulu's Alex Ching shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday and is tied for 15th in the boys 15-17 age division after the first round of the Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines North Course in San Diego.

    Austin Cody of North Charleston, S.C., leads with a 69.

    Other Hawai'i golfers are: T.J. Kua, Lihu'e, 74; Cory Oride, Lihu'e, 75; Bradley Shigezawa, Honolulu, 79; Alex Chu, Honolulu, 81.
