A new exhibit, "Just East of West," holds an opening reception at The ARTS at Marks Garage today, and continues through Sept. 1.

The exhibit utilizes new art as a tool for understanding the social mechanics and global economics of working together, according to organizers. It is a project of the Hawaii Arts Alliance. For the show, Honolulu's creative community was encouraged to explore the people, freight, and customs from the central port of the Pacific Rim.

Hawaii artist Masami Teraoka made a special contribution of three classic prints.

Contemporary printmakers have contributed work that deals with land use and misuse in the Aloha State, This component, "Plotting Paradise," is curated by Erika Johnson.

Also on display: a collaboration between surfboard shaper Eric Walden and Bhutan monk Sangay Rinchen.

Participants include: Aaron Lee, Jeff Burgess, Patrick Maguire, San Shoppell, Linda Collins Chapman, Ania Modzelewski, Scott S Yoell, Marc Yoakum, Kevin Leong, J Forest Ocean Bennett, Chris Reiner, Jon Tuthill, Kenna Doeringer, Raina Grigg, Mandell Andres and Me U (John Arnold).

Neighboring gallery Chinatown Boardroom is holding a related sale of surfboards to help purchase materials and equipment for restoring the sacred arts of Bhutan temples. Each board is a collaboration between shaper and Chinatown Boardroom owner Eric Walden and monk, Sangay Rinchen.

In the example at Marks, Rinchen (who is training in conservation) painted a Chuzing with a head of a crocodile and a body of a fish to symbolize long lasting friendship.

"Plotting Paradise" features works by 14 printmakers and resident artists of Hawaii, including Bradley Capello, Charles Cohan, Duncan Dempster, Paul Faber, Vince Hazen, Erika Johnson, Alan Konishi, Cassandra Locke, Na'a Makekau, Robert Molyneux, Carl Pao, Abigail Romenchak, Paul Weissman, and Jared Wickware.

The ARTS at Marks Garage is the key community project of the Hawaii Arts Alliance. It is a collaborative gallery, performance and office space for businesses and non-profit organization.
