Golf: Amateur who won Nationwide event to turn pro

Associated Press

PROVO, Utah — Amateur golfer Daniel Summerhays, fresh from victory in a Nationwide Tour event, said he will turn pro and give up his senior season at Brigham Young.

"It's my dream and it's time to go for it," he said Wednesday. "I live in a business that can change your life pretty fast, and that's what has happened to me."

The nephew of Champions Tour player Bruce Summerhays won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. But because he was an amateur, he didn't get the $126,000 prize.

"My goal is not to play on the Nationwide Tour. My goal is to play on the PGA Tour," he said.

Summerhays finished fourth at the 2007 NCAA championship. He shot a 60 during a round last fall.
