Flash-flood watch issued for Big Island as storm nears

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a flash-flood watch for the Big Island through Saturday as Tropical Depression Cosme approaches the islands.

At 5 p.m. today, Cosme was 540 miles east-southeast of Hilo and about 750 miles from Honolulu. The storm had maximum winds of 35 mph with higher gusts, the weather service said.

The storm was moving at about 21 mph and was expected to pass south of the Big Island Friday night and bring heavy rainfall. The rain is expected to begin Friday morning and last into early Saturday.

A flash-flood watch means flooding is possible but not imminent. Residents are advised to take precautions.
