Shark attacks man off Windward Oahu beach

Advertiser Staff

Officials evacuated Lanikai Beach following a shark attack this afternoon at nearby Bellows Beach Park.

Authorities said a 36-year-old man was bitten and taken to a hospital in serious condition but stable condition.

Witnesses said the victim, who suffered a severe calf wound, was rescued about 3:15 p.m. by people at the beach who realized the man was in trouble and went into the water and brought him ashore. Bystanders stablized the bleeding until emergency workers arrived.

The victim, who remained conscious, described the shark to rescuers as about six to 10 feet long. He said he didn't know what species of shark it was.

Ocean Safety officials requested that the fire department help with the Lanikai beach evacuation, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
