Waianae man arrested after gun found in carry-on

A 36-year-old Wai'anae man was arrested this morning after he allegedly tried to carry a .25-caliber handgun and an ammunition clip onto an interisland flight bound for Kaua'i, transportation officials said.

The man was stopped by federal Transportation Security Administration screeners at 5:10 a.m. after the gun and ammunition clip was found at the bottom of his carry-on bag.

The gun, a Titan model, .25-caliber handgun was not stolen but the man did not have a permit and the gun was not registered, said Scott Ishikawa, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation.

Services at the interisland terminal of the airport were not interrupted, he said.

"Not too many times do you find a firearm in a carry-on (bag) heading onto a flight," Ishikawa said.

The man was taken into custody by state deputy sheriffs.
