Kalilikane, Chan qualify for Challenge

Bronson Kalilikane and Alex Chan cut through the wind at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course to shoot a 5-under-par 67 and win the local qualifier of the ESPN National Golf Challenge Sunday.

Kalilikane and Chan had seven birdies and a double bogey. They won the Gross Division by two shots over Raymond Primacio and Taki Thompson.

Michael Sylva and Dennis Hallam earned the Net Division qualifying slot, shooting a 63 to beat William Paik and Dennis Lee by two.

Regional finals will be in Las Vegas Aug. 12. The national amateur two-person better-ball event is designed to find "America's Best 2 Some." National champions get an ESPY Award.

Amatour Hawai'i's 'Ewa Beach Championship tees off at 11:40 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the final groups expected to finish by 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Craig Uyehara, the 2006 Amatour Player of the Year, won last month's Coral Creek Classic and Jared Sawada won the year's opening event at Turtle Bay. Reyn Tanaka is defending his title at 'Ewa Beach.

The Don Ho Memorial tournament will be Aug. 13 at Prince Golf Club. The event will raise funds to honor the late entertainer with a statue and plaque planned for the new Don Ho Park at Kalakaua and Beachwalk. Entry fee is $150 per player and $450 per three-person team. It includes lunch and dinner. Details at donhogolftourna ment.com.

Tadd Fujikawa already has teenage professional competition. Tony Finau, a 17-year-old who turned pro in May, finished first in this week's PGA Tour U.S. Bank Championship qualifying round in Wisconsin. Finau set a course record of 64. It was Finau's first attempt to qualify for a PGA Tour event and he is the youngest to Monday qualify since Chris Couch in 1990, according to Finau's press release, written by his representatives at Wilhelmina Artist Management.
