Hawaii Superferry visits Kauai for first time

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Superferry's first vessel, the Alakai, reached Kaua'i yesterday as part of a process of route familiarization and staff training.

More than 60 people, including the ferry's Kaua'i-based employees and families, welcomed the vessel during a traditional Hawaiian ceremony as it arrived for the first time in Nawiliwili Harbor, a news release from the company said.

During the route to Kaua'i, the vessel will also undergo final certification by the U.S. Coast Guard in preparation for its launch later this summer.

Kaua'i residents can soon view the vessel and passenger decks during a community preview event. A date for the preview will be announced once confirmed.

Hawaii Superferry's vessel arrived from Alabama at Pier 19 in Honolulu Harbor July 1 and was christened with the name "Alakai," which in Hawaiian translates to "ocean path."
