Pyewacket pushing for record

Advertiser Staff

Pyewacket, Roy Disney's Reichel/Pugh 90, logged a race-best 336-nautical miles in the 24 hours leading to yesterday's roll call as the 69-vessel fleet continues its run toward the Hawai'i finish of 44th biennial Transpacific Yacht Race.

The 94-foot Pyewacket reported average speeds of 14 knots, with highs of 18 as it tries to beat the record of 6 days, 16 hours, 4 minutes, 11 seconds set by Morning Glory two years ago.

Pyewacket would have to pass the Diamond Head finish by 2 a.m. Sunday, which would require an average speed of 18 knots over the last 1,240 miles.

Race officials feel it's possible as communications vessel Alaska Eagle, less than a day's run in front of Pyewacket, reported 22-knot winds.

BASKETBALL

LOJESKI STARTS FOR JAZZ

Former University of Hawai'i player Matt Lojeski, inserted into the starting lineup at small forward, scored three points as the Utah Jazz defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 88-86, in overtime of a Rocky Mountain Revue game last night at Salt Lake City.

Lojeski, who is trying to make the Utah roster as a free agent, played 13 minutes, 46 seconds. He shot 1 of 5 from the field, including 1 of 4 from 3-point range, and had one rebound and one steal.

The Jazz play the Bulls tonight in the summer league season finale.

BASEBALL

WAVES CLINCH TITLE

Caleb Cuevas and Sean Hunter teamed on a four-hitter as the Waimea Waves beat the Kamuela Paniolos, 3-2, yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park to clinch the regular-season title of the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League.

An injury forced Cuevas to leave the game with the score 3-2 and two outs and two on in the eighth. Hunter struck out the next batter, then retired the side in the ninth to earn the save as the Waves improved to 20-8.

In other games, Patrick Haugen allowed five hits over eight innings while striking out seven as the Kauai Menehunes beat the Hawaii Aliis, 3-0; and Max Kwan hit an RBI single in the first inning, and Steve Winnick and Dan Stanley made the run stand up with a combined four-hitter as the Oahu Paddlers beat the Waikiki Surfers, 1-0.

CANADIANS IN SYNC

Canadians dominated the junior portion of the U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships at Central O'ahu Regional Park Wednesday.

Chloe Isaac and Jennifer Knobbs of Canada won the gold and bronze medals in the solo competition. In the duet, Camille Bowness and Marie-Lou Morin won gold and Laurie Ann Bedard and Audrey Houle took bronze. Canada also won the team event, followed by China and the U.S. junior national team.

China's Chen Xiaojun won silver in the solo and Bao Xiaoxiao and Feng Ziwet won silver in the duet.

In the trio finals, which only had American teams competing, the Walnut Creek Aquanuts and Riverside Aquettes tied for first. Both teams are based out of California. The Seattle Synchro Swim Team took bronze.

The senior portion of the event began yesterday with finals scheduled for tomorrow.
